Chronic Pain Clinic
Our vets and nurses are passionate about caring for pets in chronic pain, which is most commonly caused by osteoarthritis. It is estimated that 30-50% of dogs and cats will experience osteoarthritis at some stage in their lives, which will have a profound effect on the quality and length of their life.
Osteoarthritis is the destruction of cartilage that lines a normal joint, leaving the underlying bone exposed and allowed to grate against the opposite bone surface. This results in pain and a reduction in the normal range of motion of the joint. The condition is progressive and permanent.
Osteoarthritis can be caused by various underlying conditions, including:
- Hip dysplasia
- Elbow dysplasia
- Cruciate ligament disease / rupture
- Previous injury or trauma
In dogs signs of chronic pain include decreased activity levels, intermittent lameness and/or stiffness. In cats signs can be more subtle, and include difficulty grooming, not jumping onto furniture/places they would do usually, difficulty accessing litter boxes, grouchy behaviour and sleeping a lot.
Our goals in the management of osteoarthritis are:
- Relief of pain
- Lessen inflammation
- Prevent further cartilage degeneration
- Improve mobility
and overall improve your animal's quality of life!
